Which language do we speak?

Do Chileans speak English?

Unfortunately, in Chile many people do not speak English fluently.  Specially, when going shopping, it might be a bit hard for you to communicate with the sales clerks.

 

What is our currency?

The Chilean Peso, which is not the same of the Argentinian Peso.  It might be a bit confusing when converting the different 'pesos' to US dollar or Euros. For you to have an idea, here is an example (updated in Ago. 2012):

 

USD 1 = $482 Chilean Pesos (CLP)

USD 1 = $   4 Argentinian Pesos (ARS)

 

What are the Chilean banknotes and coins?

Our banknotes are: $1000 - $2000 - $5000 - $10000 - $20000

Our coins are:  $1 - $5 - $10 - $50 - old $100coin - new $100coin - $500

What can I purchase with USD 1 in Punta Arenas?

Now, you know that USD 1 is approx. CLP$482.  For example, with USD 1 in Punta Arenas you  can purchase 1 postcard or one international stamp or a small bottle of mineral water or you can pay for half an hour of Internet service in a cybercafe in downtown.
